How a nutritious diet contributes to a healthy life?

A nutritious and biologically appropriate food is vital to the wellbeing of all species. Is it relevant for man’s best friend too?

A lot of research has gone into the idea of introducing ancestral diet to our beloved pets. Is there any truth behind this? Why choose BAREKMOR™ over ordinary pet foods? Let’s find out.

Every species should eat what they would eat in the wild or as close to what they would eat in the wild as is feasible. Dogs are carnivores and the primary component of their diet is prey- small animals or a larger prey caught with the help of a pack. They eat everything – the internal organs, the meat, the bones, etc’ We sometimes find it annoying when our dogs feed on vomit, faeces and the lot. It’s all because it contains the dead and living bodies of millions upon billions of bacteria. They are an excellent source of protein, essential fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and fibre. The dogs get them in the wild when they feed on offal of their prey.

Also, in the wild, they don’t necessarily eat every day. A healthy dog can go for a week without food. They might feed every second or third day or longer depending on the size of their pack, the season, where they live and the availability of prey.

Dogs meet their nutritional requirements over time. They will eat what they need or seek it out what their body demands for. This is referred to as the ‘balance over time’ concept. They store the nutrients longer to survive adverse weather, ageing, lack of prey, disabilities, etc. Finally, dogs don’t eat grains. They can’t digest it properly and, even if they could, they can’t convert it into sugar and store it for later use.

Wild felines and canines consumed foods that supported their anatomy and physiology, more importantly, foods that their digestive tracts were equipped to handle.

Now, take a look at the modern dogs and cats. They’re chronically sick, requiring regular visits to the vet, whether they suffer from allergies, hot spots, recurring eye, ear, skin, yeast, or urinary tract infections. Even lifestyle diseases like diabetes, liver disease, cancers, and a host of other conditions. But that’s not all. They’re steadily becoming overweight and obese. Cancer kills half of our dogs and a third of our cats.

Are we giving the right food in the right amounts to the right breed? Is their favourite food, the right food?

Ancestral Diet and its impact on your Dog’s health

Dogs descend from wolves and are the first animals we humans domesticated.

Dogs are nearly identical to the wolf, genetically. Everything about them suggests they are still true carnivores. The ordinary pet food with grains, starches and other carbohydrates in considerably higher quantities than meat and is not a biologically appropriate food for them to consume. Grain-based pet foods found their way into the markets mostly after World War II as a cost effective measure and lack of essential ingredient supplies. This has led to nutritional deficiencies and a breakdown of the immune system over time. That is where our grain-free ancestral diet comes into play. At Hidden Gem Albion, our highly accredited team of nutritionists, vets, microbiologist, and research team have come up with an extraordinary pet food formula that are made from freshly prepared human grade ingredients cooked in an ideal setting at 90°C in order to retain maximum nutrients as possible. All our recipes are free from grains, cereals, soya, dairy products, artificial colours or preservatives.

Dogs have a predator’s build. Our bodies hold clues into what we were designed to eat. Dogs have muscular and powerful bodies, compared to their body weight. They have predatory claws instead of hooves. A dog’s shoulder blades are actually detached from its skeleton to allow for great flexibility and speed while chasing their prey. Their eyes are also located at the front of their skull, this is called forward facing binocular vision and it’s essential for predatory animals that rely on sight to catch prey. Dogs have a fantastic sense of smell and keen hearing, both important for hunting. Dogs have a predatory mind set geared for hunting, stalking, and killing prey. This prey drive is why dogs instinctively chase things, even if they’re just playing.

Dogs have a carnivore’s digestive tract. Perhaps one of the most important reasons to feed an ancestral diet is that dogs have the digestive tract of a carnivore. At the very beginning of the digestive process, dogs lack salivary amylase, an enzyme found in omnivorous and herbivorous animals that would normally begin the breakdown of food once it enters the mouth. Dogs have larger, more elastic stomachs because they were designed to accommodate large meals (carnivores eat bigger meals less often where herbivores graze on smaller quantities of food more often). In fact, their stomachs can hold 60-70% of the total volume of the digestive tract.

Feline Nutrition!!

Dogs started becoming genetically distinct from wolves somewhere around 130,000 years ago. Cats came into the picture later, around 9,000 years ago when humans began storing large amounts of grain. With grain storage, came mice and rats, and cats inevitably followed. Eventually, cats took their place alongside humans and domestic dogs.

Wild cats were efficient hunters and used to prey on rodents and other small animals throughout the day. They used to feed on prey to satisfy hunger and then prey again later. If you observe your cat during the day, you may find them to take small amounts of food at a time and go back to the feeding bowl later. This might look like they lose interest in food, but possibly because of their ancestral instincts. Every cat owner might have experienced early morning wake up calls by their cats who demand feeding.

Like dogs, cats are excellent hunters. We can see this from when they are kittens. They exhibit prey instincts even though they are playing. Often mother cats encourage this by play fighting with the kittens. Cats enjoy chasing, climbing trees and patiently watching birds all day. Why do they do this when they are fed at regular intervals with their (favourite) food? The answer is simple. It is in their nature to do these things.

By nutritious diet, we mean bio-appropriate diet fit for feline consumption. BAREKMOR™ Feline recipes are designed with optimum quantities of either fish/poultry protein that are easily digestible. Moreover, we want them to have the very best in life. Most cats will eat their main meals at dawn and dusk, when they would normally be hunting and catching prey in the wild, so those are often the best times to feed them.

Vegetarian or vegan diets might be a healthy choice for you, but not for your cat. Unlike dogs and humans, cats need specific vitamins, minerals, and high proteins that come from meat. Raw meat alone may cause bacterial contamination for your cats and also you and your family like salmonella poisoning. Our Feline food range is specifically designed to contain all the natural goodness your cat needs in the right amounts so they can live a life to their fullest.
